Fun in the Frozen Tundra

by Alison on January 8, 2010

It gets cold in Minnesota, affectionately known to some, myself included, as The Frozen Tundra. The past week or so has been really cold, colder than the usual cold. When temps dip this far, far enough to freeze the inside of your nose if you happen to inhale through it while outside on a day like today, we like to have a little extra fun.

We make snow. Yep, when it’s “too cold to snow” outside, we make our own, in fact, we did so this morning. If you live where we live, or anywhere that it’s currently well below freezing, you can make snow too.

Here’s what you’ll need:
  • a big cup of boiling water
  • severely cold & dry outdoor air
  • a brave someone to throw the boiling water in the air

Then go outside, and go for it!

It really is quite fun to watch. Our children are fascinated by this (ok, so am I) and we always end up doing several cups whenever the temps are as crazy cold as they’ve been this week.

***Caution- throw the water away from yourself and away from anyone watching nearby! If it’s not quite bitter cold enough for your water to change to snow fast enough, you do not want to do any scalding!***

Have fun!!
