Springs of Living Water
by John W. Peterson, 1921-
I thirsted in the barren land of sin and shame,
And nothing satisfying there I found;
But to the blessed cross of Christ one day I came,
Where springs of living water did abound.
CHORUS
Drinking at the springs of living water,
Happy now am I,
My soul they satisfy;
Drinking at the springs of living water,
O wonderful and bountiful supply!
How sweet the living water from the hills of God,
It makes me glad and happy all the way;
Now glory, grace and blessing mark the path I’ve trod,
I’m shouting “Hallelujah” ev’ry day.
O sinner, won’t you come today to Calvary?
A fountain there is flowing deep and wide;
The Savior now invites you to the water free,
Where thirsting spirits can be satisfied.

Thirsted- past tense, no longer in the barren land of sin and shame, where nothing satifies. I have savored the water free, my thirsting spirit can be satisfied. It can be, but it’s not automatic. Drinking- present tense, something I am doing, not something I have done once or twice, and not something I may do someday, but drinking, right now, in this moment and the next.
Do I always feel satisfied? Nope. When I am least satisfied, have I been drinking of His free water? Not nearly enough.
Lord, thank You for the reminder to NEVER let my cup run dry, but to continuously drink from the springs of living water that never will run dry. Oh, that I would never thirst again!
