There is something so fun about bubbles. Just watch a child’s eyes light up with delight when you blow bubbles or listen to them squeal as they chase after them. There are no two ways about it- bubbles are just plain old fun.

*FYI- sometimes while listening to classical music my girls will feel inspired to twirl around the house doing their best ballerina impersonations, often while wearing the poofy underskirts from their old flower girl dresses… Just before heading out to blow bubbles, Grace was moved by a particularly lovely song, and, well, that pretty much explains her outfit
Not exactly “town clothes”, but I pretty much just roll with the dress-up waves while we’re sticking to our own property…
Here’s an easy “recipe” for making your own Big Bubbles-
Big Bubbles Solution
1 gallon distilled water (less 2 cups poured out)
8 oz Dawn Ultra* dishsoap
4-6 Tbsp** Vegetable Glycerin
*It’s getting harder to find regular old Dawn, most recipes call for 12 oz of regular Dawn, but 8 oz is plenty if you, like me, can only find Dawn Ultra on your local store shelves…
**4 will do ok, but more is better. Glycerin isn’t cheap, so feel free to skimp, just know that the glycerin is kind of the key to making good bubbles…
Pour 2 cups of the distilled water into another container- you can make a smaller batch with this if you don’t want to waste anything! I used mine to try a batch with a natural dishsoap. I added 1 Tbsp of glycerin and 2 Tbsp of Earth Friendly Products Dishmate, Liquid Dishwashing Cleaner, Natural Grapefruit. (I love this soap! It’s what we’ve used in our home for years.) It worked great with blowing smaller bubbles, we haven’t tried it with the Big Bubble Wands yet…
Pour in the Dawn dishsoap, a funnel works great here, and then add the glycerin. Cover tightly and gently tip and roll the gallon jug, being careful not to shake and form suds.

Your bubble solution is ready to go right away, but it does get better with a day or two of aging- if you, er, I mean your kids, can stand the wait.
For more bubble fun, you could try making Square Bubbles!
What are you waiting for? It’s time to make some bubbles! Enjoy!

Wow, these are amazing! They photograph really well too, I may have to try this at the weekend. Bubbles aren’t just for kid – right? We’ll have one 2year old at our BBQ tomorrow so that’ll be a good excuse for a play!
I’m doing a giveaway this week with CSN stores, if you’re interested: http://www.jadedickinson.com/2010/07/giveaway-with-csn-stores.html
Have a lovely day,
Jade
What awesome bubbles !!! I have a 5 year old who would think this was awesome !!! Thanks for sharing the recipe
Wonderful! We’ve done it ourselves with dishsoap and water, but didn’t add glycerin (to mixed results). We’ll have to add some. Did you make the bubble wands too? I love the bubble ballerina!
Yes- the giant bubble wands are a craft that I remembered making when I was a kid!
I had lost your blog for a while and was looking back through my own blog and saw that you replied! I’m so glad to find you again! Now it’s gonna take me forever to catch up!
It’s always nice to be found again
This looks great! How about a post to make the big bubble wands?
Wow, those are big!! Looks so fun!
Those are some crazy bubbles. Thanks for the recipe. We’re totally trying this.
What a fun activity!
You’ll have to let me know if you try this! They really are quite fascinating to play with!
Oh goodness! Some of my favoite memories of you playing with me when I was little involve this very thing! I’ll have to make some new memories with the boys. But, where on earth do you get glycerin? I actually have distilled water lying around (weird story…).
I am so happy I found this post! We are planning on doing bubbles with about 40 kids at a church activity and I need to have the solution made in advance and easy to transport. I searched everywhere for a recipe that I could just mix in the jugs. This will be perfect!
