It’s Popsicle Time!

by Alison on July 27, 2010

It’s been hot around here.  I chuckle to think of my Australian friends bundling up and enjoying nights around the fireplace.  It just seems so far removed from where we are now, because, well, it is.  Winter is still a long way off, even here in The Frozen Tundra…

One of our favorite ways to cool off is by enjoying a favorite summer treat- delicious homemade popsicles.

I’ve tried several popsicle makers over the years and I have a new favorite!  The Norpro Ice Pop Popsicle Maker.  Main reason? I can make 10 at a time!  With our large (and growing!) family, I am so over the 4 at a time variety :-)

For this batch I used some tangy raspberry lemonade mixed with some natural plain yogurt.  All natural ingredients, no food colorings or high fructose corn syrup or ”flavorings” that I try to avoid.  Everyone loved them!

The only downside to this popsicle maker?  I have to buy popsicle sticks, no real biggee.  The upside to that?  Our children throw them away when done and I don’t have to wash them all and keep track of ten extra pieces

One more thing- if you try this popsicle maker, and I highly recommend that you do, remember to make sure the sticks go in straight up and down.  Don’t ask me how I know that, ’cause I’m going to tell you regardless.  We had a couple leaning, ehem, a bit too far and it made it a little tricky to get the kid off… but we managed and the popsicles were all quickly enjoyed, the popsicle maker cleaned, and the next batch (this time with strawberries blended into some Simply Lemonade!) is in the freezer :-)

After you’ve cooled off and are ready to head back outside, try blowing some super Big Bubbles!  Good times, I tell ya, good times!

i think what i’m most obsessing over is the zoku popsicle maker– apparently, it freezes the suckers in less than 7 minutes!

sadly, it only makes three at a time, but you can make nine pops before you have to re-freeze…

i swear, i’m not spamming, just a kitchen gadget junkie :-)

I just saw that one for the 1st time today! It looks pretty cool (no pun intended, hehe), but 3 at a time would never work around here, lol!

Those look yummy! I should see if my family would be interested. We’ve been looking for alternatives to ice cream. Maybe this would work…thanks for the link!

Yes, these do make an excellent alternative to ice cream! (Though, if the truth be told, and it always should, we have been making our own ice cream too!)

Homemade popsicles are just the perfect way to enjoy a summertime afternoon! I love this popsicle maker … much, much better than having to keep track of those lids!

Thanks for the commendation on a popsicle maker. I like to make bigger batches to have on hand in the freezer. We don’t usually put yogurt in ours but I will have to try it next time…

I just made 40 at a time for a breast cancer fundraiser and used 5oz paper cups for this.

If you ever need to make a HUGE batch it works well! http://sweetgrace.typepad.com/the_inadvertent_farmer/2010/07/how-to-make-homemade-popsicles-kids-will-love.html

And btw…love you children’s names. If our last had been a girl we were going to name her Mercy to go along with Grace, Faith, and Hope our other daughters…but alas it was boy #4!

Love your blog! Kim

I’m loving the inspiring homemade summer fun ideas this week!! I have a couple questions, if you don’t mind…

How did you make the awesome bubble wands?
What is your lemonade /yogurt popsicle recipe? Our kids already love the Simply Raspberry Lemonade and I would like to try the popsicles.

Is the lid on the popsicle maker aluminum or stainless steel? Dishwasher safe? ( looked on amazon and in one place it said aluminum and in the other it said stainless…I don’t know if aluminum is dishwasher safe or not).

What’s your favorite homemade ice cream making method?

My congratulations to your family on the wonderful news of your pregnancy.
God’s blessings to you and your beautiful growing family!
Kristi

Hmm, there’s a lot there, let’s see-
I’ll have to put together a tutorial about the bubble wands!
I didn’t really use an actual recipe for the popsicles, I just threw some yogurt in the blender and added a bunch of the raspberry lemonade… I should see about the measurements needed to just fill the popsicle maker, but we have some other random ones, so I wasn’t worried about having extra mixture…
You know, I thought the lid was stainless steel, but then when it came, I’m pretty sure the box said aluminum (I’ve long since thrown away the box…) Aluminum isn’t my favorite, but what can you do? :-) I hadn’t even thought about it being dishwasher safe- we use it so often and back-to-back that I just quickly handwash it and throw it back in the freezer to make more!
Our favorite homemade icre cream making method is to do single serve portions in their own quart bag (we make about 1 cup per bag) with the ice and salt in a gallon bag, and then letting the kids all shake up their own frosty goodness!
We haven’t tried the “kick the can” method yet, mostly because we never have empty coffee cans! We’re the grind our own whole beans type of coffee drinkers!

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your sweet words-
ali

Hi! I found you on blog frog. Those really do look like yummy popsicles! I really like the idea of using yogurt and juice. I usually buy the cheap popsicles at the store, but this looks like a good investment, and it might be a good afternoon activity to let my kids make their own popsicles…

Oh, yes, they love deciding what goes in the next batch and I’m pretty sure they think they taste better because they had a hand in making them :-)

I started adding yogurt to our popsicles for the creamy factor without the added sugars of pudding :-) We put yogurt in our smoothies and most of our smoothies seemed like they’d make great popsicle flavors… so it only seemed logical to me! (And they get a little added goodness!!)
