Pretty Sure It’s NOT Lyme Disease

by Alison on July 12, 2010

Last Thursday morning, we noticed what seemed to be a big and bright mosquito bite on Baby J’s right cheek.  This is Minnesota and we live in a rural area with a lot of wetlands- they don’t spray for mosquitoes around here.  A toddler, a preschooler, or anyschooler, or even a mom or dad with multiple itchy red welts on any given day in the summer (especially a summer with rain several times a week- wondering if our drought is over?) is no surprise around here.

I wasn’t worried about him at all.  I just felt sort of bad that he had such a noticeable bite on such a prominent place, but, what can you do?

I wasn’t worried- until we saw the ring, what looked like a bull’s-eye rash, the rash that indicates Lyme Disease, which was a distinct possibility seeing as I had pulled an attached deer tick (or black-legged tick, I can’t keep up when they change the names of things on me…) off of him in the past week or two (I can’t remember exactly when, I suppose that is the kind of thing that I should write down on the calendar…)

After seeing the rash, and a few minutes of Google research, I was worried.

We got right in Friday morning to be evaluated.  The outer ring was actually already fading (a bull’s-eye rash typically spreads) and the entire thing seemed less bright and inflamed-like…

We’re pretty sure it’s not Lyme Disease, though because he DID have an attached tick (though not at that spot on his face), we are to bring him in for blood testing if he starts to show any flu-like symptoms, especially if he runs a fever and seems achy, which he hasn’t.

So far, so good.

So much to be thankful for-

441. Our sweet Baby J and his sweet big baby cheeks, even when they’re spotted and ringed

442. A fading rash

443. The working theory that he reacted with a hive around a bug bite (something relatively harmless, like the unofficial Minnesota State Bird- the mosquito), which left a ring as it faded around the bite… he has had a history of hives, this is a distinct possibility…

444. Small town Minnesota

445. Going to their first parade

446. Too much candy, just this once :-)

447. Hours of floats pulled by John Deere tractors

Why isn’t he smiling? What’s not to love? He gets to be in a parade AND drive a John Deere tractor at the same time!  There is just no pleasin’ some people…

448. Free children’s games

449. Jumping fun

450. 10# of big beautiful blueberries

451. Blueberry pancakes

452. Blueberry muffins

453. Blueberries in their breakfast cereal

454. Blueberries by the handful for snacking

455. Blueberries in the freezer for muffins in the future

i already commented on this on fb but i was reading your list and laughed at the blueberries – woke up early this morning to surprise my kidlets with blueberry muffins. got the muffins in the oven and went to the sink to start washing dishes when i noticed the blueberries were still in the colander. so they had muffins with jam and i made blueberry coffeecake instead ;-) enjoy blueberry season – it’s way too short!

That’s cracking me up! I can imagine the morning daze it would take to spoon muffin batter into the muffin tin without noticing the lack of blueberries, hehe…

And blueberry coffeecake- you’ve given me an idea for tomorrow morning!

I am glad you don’t think it is Lyme disease. Yes, Google research can be very scary. Sometimes, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I hope it’s not Lyme Disease! What a scary rash to see on your sweet baby’s cheeks :-(

Meanwhile, I’m now having a blueberry obsession! Great photos!

I’m with you. I would have been totally worried when the ring pattern appeared. Glad it all turned out ok!
